School of Media Science registers for the second annual online "Global Game Jam"

Tokyo University of Technology’s School of Media Science will be taking part in the Global Game Jam (GGJ), an online game development event held simultaneously in more than 100 countries around the world.

First held in 2009, the GGJ is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest game development hackathon, where teams of game development professionals, amateurs, and students endeavor to produce a similarly-themed game in under two days (48 hours). The 2020 hackathon saw a record-breaking 48,753 people participating in 934 venues in 118 countries and regions around the world, with 9,601 games created.

At the 2021 event, which was held online, more than 6,000 games were created in 585 locations in 104 countries and regions around the world.

Last year the event shifted online and similarly this year it will be conducted using the Discord and Zoom platforms. Participation is free of charge and registration will be accepted until January 27. Presentations at the initiation, work-in progress and final unveiling stages of game development will be streamed online via "YouTube Live!

Students from the School of Media Science have been involved in game development related venue management, as well as planning and distribution of live programs since 2010, before any other Japanese university would do the same. This will be the 13th consecutive year of participation in GGJ. The event also serves as "hands-on learning" for students who can team up with professionals in this intensive workshop in order to experience the game development process from planning and programming, design to sound; in fact a large number of former participants are currently active in the gaming and related industries.
